Common Household Accidents and How to Avoid Them
When it comes to safety, it’s easy to take the environment you live in for granted. We’re all guilty at times of thinking that we’re always going to be ultimately safe in our own homes, and that nothing bad could possibly befall us there.
But accidents can and do happen in the home. At least, at your place of work, people are paid to be responsible for ensuring the environment you’re working in is safe. At home, we don’t have that luxury. It’s up to us to ensure that our homes remain a safe place for us and our loved ones to reside.
Visiting a doctor, or having to buy painkillers online from a UK pharmacy – these activities aren’t anyone’s idea of fun. So what can you do to avoid them? Here are four common causes of injury in the home, and what you can do to help ensure they don’t happen:
Wet or slippery floors are most dangerous when you least expect them. So, if you spill a drink in your kitchen make sure you clean it up right away. Similarly, if you’re in cleaning mode and have just mopped, let everyone in the house know, so they don’t waltz unsuspectingly into an accident.
Changing light bulbs, putting things in the attic – anything involving ladders should be done with absolute care. We know it’s tempting to just get those DIY chores done and out of the way as soon as, but don’t be hasty. Be safe instead. Wait until someone is around to help or hold the ladder for you.
Rushing around near a hot stove or cooking while distracted are major causes of kitchen-related accidents. Remember that hot items deserve your full attention. Always take care with pans and ovens, and invest in a decent pair of heatproof mitts if you haven’t already.
We use plug sockets every day, and it’s easy to forget that they can be dangerous – particularly when they become damaged or faulty. If you spot any broken fittings of exposed wires, get them fixed right away by a qualified electrician. And remember, overloading sockets with extensions and multiple sockets is just asking for trouble.
